Pitching and Marketing in Europe on Ten Euros a Day
What happens when you have a start up company and you are not allowed to use your funding for marketing? One of the companies that I will be representing at the Frankfurt Book Fair has found this an issue. They received a substantial grant to create a wonderful product and then did not have substantial revenue or other funds to market their product. This is the realization of my Luxembourg research and the reason I started a distribution company. Having an excellent product does not guarantee that your company will flourish especially on the world wide web.
Not having a large marketing budget, how do start ups get recognition for their products and increase sales? One way to achieve recognition and develop branding is to use the media and non profits to promote your product.
My company is pursuing this avenue for marketing. Currently, I am working on a publishing project with Translators 4 kids which does free translations for projects having to do with Children. I am currently working with this group to create a fund raising book. The group is collecting the information to make the book and my committee is in charge of finding a publisher interested in the project. The publishing of the book is the ultimate goal of the organization. My goal is to help get this book published and to meet people in other countries who might be able to help Sofia Verlag on future projects.
The book will contain photographs and stories from children who are living in challenging situations such as homelessness and poverty. There is a committee in charge of the book development. My group is in charge with getting their finished product published. If you are interested in joining my group, there is a link on my blog to the yahoo group for T4K. If you know anyone interested in helping with this project and want to volunteer them or provide me with information, you may contact me at info at sofiaverlag dot com.
This form of marketing is not fast but it works... slowly. If you are not trying to please venture capitalist with fast and enormous returns, this method works just fine. It allows a company to grow at a steady pace and to test different strategies without stressing over their tight budgets.
The Book Messe is less than six weeks away and I will be representing three product lines. One product that I really like is the Ouch Kit. This product was created by a therapist in Minneapolis who also is an author of various books. I will be representing this product for licensing at the book messe and hopefully will be able to increase the sales of her products internationally. The kit helps adults and children with communication issues by providing them with a valuable communication tool.
The main goal this week is to get the licensing and agency agreements reviewed and work on getting all the paperwork finalized before the Messe.
