Dell Tries To Be Pretty and Chic

After announcing that Dell is going to go into Wal Mart, Dell is now announcing that they are going into a high end department store.

Six colours. I am mildly excited about this. The problem is that if I see the name Dell at Wal Mart and I see the price tag at Wal Mart, I will have a hard time buying a Dell from Macy's.

Women are smart but we don't necessarily know what goes inside a computer. What we see when shopping is this. Ahhhh there is a Dell computer at Wal Mart (people who shop at Macy's also shop at Wal Mart for toilet paper) Then I go to Macy's and see the same name on the shelf for LOTS MORE MONEY. Oh, let me see.. this one is pink and green.. not tan...

Going into Wal Mart was a horrible move for Dell. It will take alot more than a little bit of color and a fancy store to correct that. Best thing would be to withdraw from Wal Mart but can they do it? The product that went into Wal Mart should have been a generic mark.. not the one you spent so long building up. Which consultant told you it would be a good move... Hopefully, you are using a new consulting company Dell... looks like you are going to need it.

I agree that Dell is heading off in the wrong direction with this. They can't simultaneously pursue high-end customers as they go after bargain customers at Walmart. High-end customers want to know they are buying something special and unique. They won't look kindly on Dell selling similar (but blander) models at a significantly cheaper price.
