Email Volley

I want things quick. I am not sure if that is because I was raised in the United States or if that is just part of my personality. I want results... NOW. Well, business just does not seem to work like that when you are using email. I have been sending and receiving emails from three companies regarding product licensing and distribution. The emails go back and forth, back and forth, and really nothing is happening...until yesterday. Yesterday, I got an email from a large publishing house in the United States who owns the rights to a brand that I want to use. I submitted the idea months ago thinking that they would say yes (American super optimist attitude). The orignal fax was given to someone who just started working for the company. She emailed me and after her first staff meeting the proposal was snatched away from her. Now the request has been given back to her and it looks like we will be coming to some kind of agreement by the end of July 2006. We are doing this all through email. One nice thing about this slow volley is that I get to think about what I am going to write without there being a rush. I doubt I will have a product line ready by September so this product will be showcased at the 2007 BookMesse.

This development is good. Email volley continues and it looks like I might score a point..

It is important for anyone wanting to be an entrepreneur to know that you have to have the gall to step forward and ask. Fear is not going to get you very far. If you really believe in your idea go ahead and use it. If you squirrel it away, someone else is just going to figure it out. In my creativity classes, I give an excerices where everyone gets the same five words. I then ask the group to write a paragraph using those words. Everytime I do this excercise, people are amazed at the varied results. Not one person writes the same. This also applies to ideas. How many coffee shops are there... we have Starbucks, SF coffee company, Carribou and all those independant shops. All are doing the same thing. Selling Coffee to you. Not an original idea but all of these places are thriving because people like to drink coffee. As long as your idea has a niche and you can draw customers, you will be ok.. don't let fear of failure stop you.
