Day 25 Zen Vision:M What phone should I buy?

Over the weekend, my phone froze. Today, I talked with two German female lawyers and I mentioned that I needed to buy a phone. Both women laughed. One said she was also looking for a phone but had no idea what to get. All she wanted was something that looked nice and was a mobile phone. She did not want an mp3 player, a PDA, internet or anything else. She wanted a phone. A pretty phone. I showed her my ugly Nokia and we chatted about how great Nokia is but how ugly my phone is. Oh well. I will be heading to the store to look at the new Nokias and see if there is anything prettier.

In addition to talking about phones, I chatted with the lawyers about non compete agreements and Conrad Black. Yes, German executives do not have the same luxury as US executives and all the litigation that has been happening recently is of interest to German lawyers. The question of the day: Would it work to have a very stupid person as the head of your company or if you are the head of the company to act as a very stupid person to avoid liability. I told her that as long as it wasn't a stupid lawyer... that would be difficult for anyone to believe.

We also talked about the non compete agreement signed by the former Dell CEO Kevin Rollins who will be getting 5 million for one year. He will be paid in installments to sit at home and twiddle his thumbs unless he decides to move to one of the ten states that do not enforce non compete agreements. It is smart of Dell to pay him in installments.. he probably has a clause that says if he breaks the agreement, he loses the remaining compensation.

Do you know which states do not enforce non competition agreements? I read a working paper today by Matt Marx, Deborah Strumsky and Lee Fleming about non competes and Inventor Mobility. Fascinating. Who knew that employees, executives and partners have the opportunity to move to different states and avoid the non compete agreement they signed elsewhere.

This would not work in Europe. Europeans have an aversion to moving... even within their own country. for Americans, this is an interesting way to attract technology companies to your state. No wonder Madison is becoming a small silicon valley. You can move to states like Wisconsin and the courts will not enforce a non compete that you signed in another state... check out the article, it gives some valuable information.

Today I tried two things. I tried making Chai Tea and I tried the Zen Vision:M radio. Both worked. I have one thing left to try before the end of the week. I am not sure I will get it done... I have to try hooking up the Zen to my television. I really like the Zen. I am used to using it now so, even though it is ugly, it certainly has been useful.
