Want to be a CEO? Toytown Writers, NPR Podcast competition
Morphing is something business is all about. Recently the trend among businesses is not to morph as much as to merge. Not creating something new and innovative but just something bigger. Mergers and acquisitions keeps investment bankers earning large sums of money but does it actually helps business? Not really. We are just seeing bigger companies that are starting to resemble dinosaurs. Is this good for the companies? Not really. They recycle ideas and find it hard to maneuver without using brute force.
Would you like to be a CEO for such a company? When you have a CEO who understands that not every branch of his company needs to make a profit immediately, you have a great CEO but how can that CEO compete with the shareholders who are complaining that they are not making enough money. They are making short term investments in this company and are very vocal wanting immediate results.
The stock market does not help companies or CEOs. Investors are interested in immediate profits not long term planning. The modern CEO is like the current heads of state. He has a few years to wow the investors and he might get two terms before he is given a golden parachute. Being a CEO is an almost impossible job. As a CEO, you must be a visionary. You have the health of a company in your hands and you may follow a path that may not be popular but you are the leader, supposedly. You want to lead but are you allowed to lead?
A good CEO wants people on his team who disagree with him without backstabbing. People who will challenge him without revolting. You want a strong team, but even if you have the vision and a strong team, your shareholders can sabotage a wonderful business plan...
If you look closely at some public companies, you will see them getting rid of valuable staff so that earnings improve, trying to find cheaper raw materials for their products to make the profit margins larger or making short term agreements for immediate profits which will end up being like an anchor around their necks in three years.
If you are ready to be the CEO for a large corporation, there are several out there looking for you. Just be sure that you have a parachute and make sure it is made out of gold and not stock options.
Toytownwriters had a meeting but I didn't get their writing assignments so I guess they don't want to post anymore which is a pity. I told them that people were listening to their work and maybe that made them a bit worried. Since I have nothing to post from them this week, I will start doing the creativity podcast in it's place.
The writers did agree to have the first draft of their novels ready by May 1st. It will be interesting to see if I can get my novel dissected. I chose to write about the German Social system. The way it is not working for immigrants and single parents. I took a year out of being self employed to push my way through the system and after many days of tearful frustration, I have proof that the system is dysfunctional. Luckily, through this process, I met quite a few people who experienced worse discrimination so it is a good story and based on the truth which makes it even better. It is hard to beat reality. I have to do some research on a few things, a few strange laws that I did not experience but which applied to other people here living on unemployment.
NPR has a new contest. They are looking for Podcasters. If you are interested in winning 15,000 dollars (must be a US citizen or resident) check out the NPR Website for the contest. You will need to upload a two minute segment in April. I registered and look forward to seeing how this works. I wonder if this will be more interesting than the Penguin Wiki. I lost interest in that within a week... I hate wasting my time and that just felt like I was wasting time and words.
One of the large PR agencies in the US decided to get a team together to focus on podcasting and blogging. It will be interesting to see how they use these mediums for their company and clients. If you are interested in a job working in NYC in a cutting edge field of PR/marketing, Check out Hill and Knowlton. This is the perfect job.. well almost perfect.. it is in NYC, Munich would make it the perfect job.
