Top Ten Tips for Starting A Business by Sugar Cat Publishing
This week, I started podcasting Sofia Magazine and I decided to blog my thoughts about what I podcast. The podcast is just the article, so if you want the top ten tips, please listen to the podcast. I am going to comment on a few of the tips here b/c when I was reading the article I wanted to make comments but I didn't want to distract from Sugar Cat's article... so here it is, my interpretation of the ten tips:
1. I do this project because i am unable to stop myself. I think about it all the time. I live and breathe my ideas so I have no way of keeping them contained. It is one of my passions and that is why I continue to work on Sofia Verlag.
2. Sofia is targeting Women. Is that Unique enough? Not really, but when you are targeting technology and women, it is very unique. So unique that it qualifies as a purple cow (have you read that book).
3. Sofia gets Free advice whenever I can but for what I want. Most people have no idea how to tackle this market segment and have not even bothered to really try. Getting free advice is easy b/c I am David and I only have a few stones.
4/5 Except for my spelling, I do many things well. At least everything that I am interested in. This has been a hard lesson to learn but now that I know this, I avoid doing things that do not interest me. I know it does not interest me when I feel like I have to drag myself to do it. I also am in my thirties and experienced so I know what I like and what I don't. I also know lots of very talented people and I want them to be successful and the only way for that to happen is for me to share (they will be succesful but it is easier if we all share) I like sharing, that is why I am reading my book to you. oops, back to the list...
6. My life is a steep learning curve. I don't think you should ever stop learning... If you stop learning, you will become boring and no one will want to be around you. I certainly will not want to be around you.
7. Take time to think. The bathroom is not my favorite place to think and I have never had great ideas in there... my ideas come to me in my dreams.. after sleeping for a few hours..... walking to the Ubahn is a great time to think or using any form of public transportation...
8. Yes, be honest with the tax people.... be honest with your clients... be honest with your friends and be honest with your partner. It just makes life easier when you try being honest but it can be difficult.. but it is something to strive for in all our interactions.
9. Focus... HA...that is a hard thing for a creative person. When you have visionary abilities, you can see the potential for many different ideas... so you have to be careful. I am currently podcasting for marketing purposes and to create a branding.. I know why I am doing this but I also know that I love doing this, it fits in with my publishing company... My company is always morphing...like I said, you keep trying ideas until one works... this one works. So don't get upset if your focus changes, just use some of that potty time to figure out if the changes are taking you in the right direction and that you have some idea of what that direction is (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BUSINESS PLAN)
10. Fear will never stop me. Before doing the episode for the magazine I sat there staring at the computer and hating the idea of having to talk for ten minutes. I love talking. I love sharing ideas. I love technology but on Sunday night, I sat there worrying that people would not like my voice. Fear. Will I make a fool out of myself? Fear. Will I be able to do this five days a week. Fear. I went ahead and did the podcast feeling the fear. I survived. I felt great afterwards... Fear in this instance was an acknowledgment that I am stepping out of my safety zone which is a good thing... I will avoid being boring. This is what I want people in my creativity classes to experience...
I am in the same category as Richard Nixon .... someone who failed. I failed but not to the grand scale that Nixon failed. I was not running a country but the feeling of failure is the same... whether you are a CEO or a homemaker failing is a horrible exerience and it was something I feared. having now failed at a few things in life... work, marriage... I learned to get up, dust myself off and troop towards my next challenge.
