Microsoft - A Company Cranking the Wrong Computer

Ouch!

I read this article and found it amusing especially since I have an article about the laptop on my magazine. That little hand crank computer is not designed to handle windows. The software on that little children's computer is designed to hook those kids up to a network. Get those children hooked into the internet. Designers spent months figuring out how to make the operating system simple enough to run on the space provided. Microsoft does not have a software program designed for this little computer, Microsoft just want to give away some "modified xp" software.

Why do I think this is a problem? First, it is poor PR. What in the world do you think you are doing?

The computer for poor children does not need a new operating system. Don't be so conceited, so American. You are a global company act like a global company. The time to provide an operating system for this computer would have been when it was designed... not now.

Second, Windows crashes at regular intervals. Are you asking the whole third world to invest in technical support? The people receiving these computers do not have the financial means to maintain a windows computer or upgrade to a better system.

Third, as the Mobilised article states, Microsoft's operating system is not designed to work on a light and small computer. It drains energy not only physically but mentally.

What would have been a better target for Microsoft?

Well, go to the manufacturer of the little computer. That company is planning to take the computer to the commercial market. How do I know? I asked the company. They said they are building their business plan. Now that is what is exciting and should be your focus. Microsoft is a Software company and a software game company. Don't keep everything so divided.

Now the commercial version of this computer will not have a crank. No middle class child will crank a computer without duress. They are too lazy for that. Middle class parents will buy moderately priced computers for their children that are decked out with software for children for education purposes and pay a premium. You don't have to sell it on the discount shelves of Wal Mart.

So go forth Microsoft, target the children of wealthy parents not the poor children of the third world. The wealthy parents are waiting for you. They have been waiting for you for awhile.
